The Entity that is the Sacred Elder
*We were asked to write a reflection piece for Atlanta's UNIOV Celebration of Elders event, to be included in their Commemorative Booklet. What we submitted is below.*
The elders of our community represent an important part in our collective consciousness. The sacred elder is a living, breathing, physical representation of not only our ancestral wisdom, but this entity is also a reflection of the continuum, having already trekked the road that one day we will travel. The elder has experienced the journey, that we are reminded to trust; standing where we will one day stand.
The sacred elder is to be venerated and observed. The entity that is the elder has mastered, patience, grace and Iwa pele. Let us study their plights or what others may consider ‘mistakes’ or ‘short comings’… It is a certified and approved, accredited course in LIFE!
Our ancestors teach us that elders become Agbalagba (elders) because of years of dedication to the community and their families; not solely because of age although our culture will acknowledge seniors even if they are 1 day older. Our ancestors established Agba Sanko (elders with integrity) who gave birth to Omo Luabi (a respectful child). If the system is out of proportion the elders will raise omo komo (a child not fit to be a child) or a "menace to society."
Our elders are the foundation of our CULTURE and TRADITION. Any celebration of the entity that is a sacred elder is a celebration of our compendium human DNA.
