Oyotunji Yoruba Kingdom celebrates its 58th annual Odun Obatala.
On a tropical night in 1959 Oba Oseijeman Adefunmi traveled with his mentor to Matanzas, Cuba and brought the gods of Africa back to America. While the deities existed in in North America, the tradition was not available for Africans born in America. Oba Oseijemans's initiation into the Spiritual traditions of the Yoruba sparked a national movement that continues to this day. This movement has been coined the Yoruba Cultural Restoration Movement which has its roots in Harlem, NY. Thru the various temples established in New York, Gary and Chicago the America born Yoruba under the leadership of Oba Oseijeman sought to spark the minds of the African descendants with a memory of their ancestors culture. African descendants in North America suffered from cultural amnesia. This esteemed occasion has been dubbed the Celebration of our real emancipation from the mental, social and political hegemony of Europe. Long live The Cultural Restoration Movement. |
