Oyotunji kingdom welcomes you. You have just entered the Sacred Yoruba Kingdom, the friendliest town in the Carolinas. Visitors are greeted by our learned guides. Once you sign in you are guided slowly through the kingdom and her history. keep your mind open and prepare some questions because your guide will cover plenty of ground. Weaving in and out of the American black struggle for freedom, civil rights and Traditional African culture your guide will inspire you to learn and study the culture of your ancestors.  Freedom at the Combahee river

The Combahee River Raid site. Affectionally knowns as the Harriet Tubman site, where she did her greatest work.If you saw the movie then you know the iconic civil war scene. When in real life that historical fight for freedom happened just 5 miles from Oyotunji Kingdom. Tour this historic site with our guide and learn how Harriet Tubman led a military raid, freed nearly 1,000 Africans from bondage. 

New Years Day freedom

On new Years Day 1863 on the plantation of John Joyner thousands gathered to hear the very first reading of the emancipation proclamation  in the Slave holding south. From that day on the Gullah Gheechee of the sea islands became the first to be freed at the onset of the war. Many men and women joined the war efforts some were drafted only to run away later. Emancipation Day site is a definite bucket lister. It will take you about 20 mins drive from the Kingodm. 

Penn school for freedmen

Walk back through the educational history of the Gullah Geechee who were the first to be freed in the south. Penn Center is located on ST. Helena Island ( the seat of the Gullah culture) about 30 mins drive from the Kingdom. This historical school helped to assimilate African slaves into white society.

Hunting Island

Welcome you and your family to one of the Gullah Gheechee nations most enchanting state park. Hunting Island is tucked along the beaufort county coast approximately 35 mins drive from the Oyotunji Kingdom. at 8$ per adult the fun can never cease as you drive through the enchanted forest road to arrive at the beautiful light house and strand called Hunting Beach.

Local crabbing and fishing

One of Our local guides will wish you and yours off to the Local Creeks to catch a bucket of 8 legged Gullah Gheechee delicacies. The blue crab season co-insides with family reunions so its a time of gathering outdoors. an afternoon fishing for crabs can surely offer a relaxing atmosphere and pass time to enjoy the Gullah Gheechee coast.
