                                                     About Us

In  1970 Oba Oseijeman Adefunmi I and a hand full of Cultural Nationalist, left the urban temples of N.Y., Chicago and Indiana, ventured into  the swamps of the South Carolina Lowcountry and built the Kingdom of Oyotunji. Thus reclaiming the Culture and Traditions of the Yoruba ancestors and deities. Forty years later, North America’s oldest, authentic African village still stands. Each year throngs of people from all walks of life journey to this tiny Village that, " just wouldn't die." The large temples, museum style tour and monthly festivals were designed to inspire and display the Culture and Religion of the African descendants in N. America. The village residents live in a group of simple structures, wear colorful West Africa garments and provide spiritual counseling and religious training for individuals seeking to rediscover the culture of their ancestors. There are monthly public festivals (see calendar of events)  held at the village, so you can stop by almost any weekend for a one of a kind experience. In the age of information and enlightenment you have arrived at the opportunity to immerse yourself in the life style and skills of an ancient culture and incorporate them into your urban, complex matrix of choices to make ends meet where you are. We also offer lectures by well trained speakers who are willing to travel to your school or community center.  Thank you again for interest and support in Oyotunji.org, your cultural connection to the Source. Oyotunji Village pledge of allegiance : English

I am compelled by a spiritual force that I can not resist.
To swear my eternal allegiance  to the King and the flag of the Yoruba nation.
Therefore in the name of my King I also solemnly swear to do everything in my
power and use every means conceivable for the welfare of my people and the
preservation of the culture and traditions of our ancestors....so let it all ye Gods of Africa!
